The Changing Culture of
Today’s Nursing Home
We have decided to put this section in our Web Site as a way of educating the consumer about the changes that are occurring in nursing homes. A national movement is beginning, and the changes to Nursing Homes is very consumer driven.
The Long Term Care Industry is beginning to change due to the fact that the residents we serve are expecting something other than the traditional Nursing Home. Changing the ‘Culture’ of the Nursing Homes not only improves the quality of life of the residents and their caregivers, but also improves the quality of care that the residents receive.
The following in an ‘official’ definition of what Cultural Change has come to mean in the Nursing Homes that are actively trying to make Cultural Changes in their Facilities:
Cultural Change is a transformation anchored in values and
beliefs that
Returns control to elders, and to those who work closest to
them.
Its ultimate vision is
to create a culture of aging that is
‘Life-affirming, satisfying, humane, and meaningful.’
Cultural Change can transform a ‘facility into
A home’, ‘a patient into a person’ and ‘a schedule into a
choice.’
Why do Nursing Homes Need to Change?
The
PBS “News Hour with Jim Lehrer” did a survey and showed:
45%
of those responding said that people who entered a Nursing
Home
were better off than before they entered.
43%
of those who responded said that they found it totally
Unacceptable
to move into a nursing home.
As an industry, we need to change the way people view Nursing
Homes.
Today, people living in Nursing Homes continue to have a great
quality of life.
Nursing Homes are places where people can go and get assistance
with
Living. People in
Nursing Homes can continue to be involved in their
Communities, they can continue to learn new things, and can
greatly
Contribute to the daily happenings of the facility.
When looking for a Nursing Home, please take the time to visit
several
Different facilities. You
need to know and understand that every
Facility is different and values different things. Some Facilities really do
Want to make a difference in the lives of those who live in
their home.
Fairview Manor is just one of those facilities that is trying to
make a
Difference. We hope
that you will come and see that we can make a
difference in your life
or in the life of your loved one.
